We had a really great week. I wish I had taken the time to post earlier this week, but we have been so busy. I started off the week doing something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I made a bed to grow some winter produce using the wood from pallets. It’s not a raised bed, just bordered.
Once the bed was dug out and bordered, my husband added some compost, and I topped that with some top soil. I found this great site that lists the best fruits and vegetables to plant in north Florida, and the best time to plant them. Using that, and a very helpful associate at Ace Hardware, I chose to plant cucumbers and tomatoes.
While this is not my first time planting vegetables, I have not had any real success, so I really want to do this right. Before putting my veggies in the ground, I put a layer of the black weed shield over the soil. Rather than covering the bed with wood chips, I used the old hay that once lined the floor of the chicken house. I chose that for a couple of reasons. First, it’s free and second, it is covered in chicken poop-free fertilizer. For aesthetic reasons, we topped that with clean hay, so that the poop was less visible. I’ve been wanting to turn my front yard into a kitchen garden for a while, but I got this particular idea from a book that my mom gave my husband for his birthday, The Backyard Homestead. It shows you how to have a productive yard so that you can depend on yourself for food. It even tells you how many animals you can raise for food, from chickens, to goats, and even pigs, depending on the size of your yard. It’s a pretty cool resource.
We’ve also been preparing for a long overdue visit from my mother-in-law, so we’ve been in full clean mode all week. I finally managed to clear off the table, which seems to be the center of our clutter. In an effort to prevent it from getting out of control again, I moved the filling cabinet (for lack of a better word) out of the Florida broom and put it next to the table, to make it easier to file papers as they come into the house. I also found a more convenient place to put the broom and mop, which has made it easier for me to keep the floors clean. That makes me very happy, as I love the feeling of a clean floor under my bare feet. I’m really hoping that will make it easier for me to be a better homemaker.
